Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is radon only a problem in the UK?
A: No, radon is a worldwide issue. The background level of radon in some countries, for example Switzerland, is much higher than in the UK. Over 300,000 Bq/m3 has been found in properties in the village of Umhausen in Austria!
Q: Can instant testing be carried out?
A: No. Radon levels inside properties fluctuate constantly, so there is no benefit in taking ‘grab samples’. As the associated dangers come from long term exposure, an average over a sustained period of time is the only relevant measurement to take.
Q: Are guarantees given for radon remedial work?
A: No. Various external factors can affect how much radon is in the ground surrounding a property and no company can guarantee that the works carried out will continue to be effective if any of these external factors change. When an ADD Waterproofing system is installed, the waterproofing element carries the contractor’s standard waterproofing guarantee (usually 10 years). The electrical components carry manufacturer guarantees.
Q: Can radon be introduced in building materials?
A: Yes. Depending on where they have been sourced from, small quantities of radon can be emitted from certain stones and aggregates.
Q: Can radon cause any health problems other than lung cancer?
A: The only definite link proven is between radon exposure and lung cancer. Radon has been implicated in certain forms of leukaemia, particularly childhood leukaemia, however this is not universally accepted.
Q: How much do the ADD electrical units cost to run?
A: The actual cost of running the positive pressure and inline fan will depend upon the speed settings required to deal with the size of the basement, however on average the positive pressure unit will use approximately £7 electricity per year, and the inline fan £30.
Q: Does the ADD system require maintenance?
A: The waterproofing system should be maintained annually (check the pump(s), flush the drainage channels) and the electrical fans should be checked at least once every two years – they require very little maintenance, but the filter on the positive pressure will need cleaning. Repeat radon tests should be carried out as part of the maintenance package to ensure that the system continues to manage the radon away from the property.
Q: Can a general building contractor install the system?
A: No. The ADD Waterproofing system is patented and only available from a network of Licensed Installers. Without full training and specialist knowledge, it is easy to inadvertently increase radon levels, so a general contractor should not be used for these works.
Q: Why won’t a tanking system work?
A: Cementitious tanking systems are no longer the preferred option for waterproofing as they are prone to cracking due to thermal movement, traffic vibration etc. If the system cracks, it will not be waterproofing and it certainly won’t be gas proof.
